(Due 11/13) ROUGH DRAFT - Informative/Explanatory Essay "What drives someone to undertake a mission?"
"What drives someone to undertake a mission?"
You have been reading nonfiction accounts of the lives and experiences of real people who have undertaken a mission to pursue their goals. You have also been reading fictional stories of adventure--and of characters who have also undertaken missions, often while facing great personal risk. Now you will think about the experiences of these people and characters as you write your own informative/explanatory essay.
Think about what motivates the people or characters in the selections you have read. Consider this question: What drives us to undertake a mission?
Write an informative/explanatory essay that answers this question, modeling elements of your writing on the example layout below. This is a rough draft, so you may use any of the graphic organizers you made during class last week.
Your essay should include:
-an introduction with a clear thesis statement, or central idea
-3 body paragraphs with relevant supporting details (like textual evidence) and thorough analysis to support your thesis statement
-a conclusion that restates your thesis and summarizes your information
---------------
Step-by-step layout:
Introduction- Introduce your 3 characters and thesis statement (what drives them to undertake their missions?)
Body Paragraph 1
Claim: What motivates your 1st character to undertake their mission?
Reason: Why does it motivate them?
Evidence: Use a quote to support your claim and reason. Use quotation marks, then add a citation (author's last name)
Elaboration: What does this quote mean?
Warrant/Conclusion: So what? Tie it all together! Connect the evidence to the claim.
Body Paragraph 2
Claim: What motivates your 2nd character to undertake their mission?
Reason: Why does it motivate them?
Evidence: Use a quote to support your claim and reason. Use quotation marks, then add a citation (author's last name)
Elaboration: What does this quote mean?
Warrant/Conclusion: So what? Tie it all together! Connect the evidence to the claim.
Body Paragraph 3
Claim: What motivates your 3rd character to undertake their mission?
Reason: Why does it motivate them?
Evidence: Use a quote to support your claim and reason. Use quotation marks, then add a citation (author's last name)
Elaboration: What does this quote mean?
Warrant/Conclusion: So what? Tie it all together! Connect the evidence to the claim.
Conclusion- Restates the thesis statement, explains how it ties in with 3 characters, and what they have in common when striving to reach their goal.
